Before the holidays, I received an email from my boyfriend who was alerted that ELF Cosmetics had a sale on their liquid lipsticks on their website. They were on sale for $1USD and free shipping so I went to town and purchased three of them. I added more items to my cart to make it worthwhile, but we’re going to review the Luscious Liquid Lipsticks today.
First of all, I will say that I probably won’t order from their website again. The customs I was charged at the door came to about 40% of the total price of my order. It was still super cheap, so I’m not too upset, but it’s not something I’ll chance again. Rexall carries a pretty decent collection of ELF Cosmetics, so I’ll stop by there if necessary.
The applicator to this liquid lipsticks is a sponge tip with holes to distribute the color. The bottom clicks up and pushes the product out for use. This kind of reminds me of a product I used to use back in the early 2000’s when I was in high school. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but the shape of it makes it easy to apply. I hope that it won’t waste product in the future though by either pushing too much out or leaving some at the end that you can’t get out.
This is the interesting stuff. The above picture is the swatches. From left to right, we have Ruby Slipper, Cherry Tart, and Pink Lemonade. The first two are sheer, and the last color is more opaque. Below, we have swatches on the lips as well.
The formula of these is sort of weird. I thought it would be an opaque liquid lipstick with some shine, but they apply more like a gloss. You can even see my freckles on my lips through the first two colors. Pink Lemonade is the most opaque out of the three and could be worn on its own, but I’m more likely to wear Cherry Tart and Ruby Slipper over another lipstick.
In these swatches, I didn’t apply a lip liner so we can compare the real colors. As I sit here with Pink Lemonade still on my lips, I think I need a lip liner under it to stop it from bleeding and moving around. The website does describe it as moisturizing, and I have to agree. My lips don’t feel like they’re on fire or getting flaky. Generally, when I wear lip glosses, my lips get flaky underneath and show through the color.
These aren’t going to be a product I reach for on a regular basis. If I want something glossy and breezy for an everyday look or minimal makeup, I will probably keep these around. I do wish the color was more opaque and less slippery. Overall, for $1, I’d say they’re a good buy, but you do get what you pay for with these. You can see if they are available at your local Rexall or purchase them from their website here.
